Port Sunlight Wheelers have an active cyclocross section and members can be found pushing themselves to the limit on muddy courses around the country most weekends during the autumn and winter months. The club is proud of its participation in one of the country’s fastest growing types of cycle racing and is keen to introduce more people to the discipline.
Traditionally held between September and February, the cyclocross season covers the coldest and wettest months of the year, however, it is these conditions that make the sport so rewarding. It is a fast and furious form of cycling which offers incredible enjoyment for both participants and spectators. Normally held on a multi-surfaced course of around one mile in length, a typical senior race lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and usually includes at least one short, sharp incline that requires riders to dismount to carry their bike up.
Cyclocross is popular with a wide range and ages and abilities, and Sunlight play an active part in competing and promoting events. The club is a member of the North West Cyclo-Cross Assocation (NWCCA) and takes part in the North West Cyclo-Cross League, hosting a day of racing at Bebington Oval on the Wirral each year. Each round of competition includes races in the following categories: Under 8s, Under 10s, Under 12s, Youth Under 16, Novice 16+, Junior/Senior Men, Junior/Senior/Veteran Women, Veterans 40+, and Veterans 50+.
The club is seeking more members for its cyclocross section, so if you think you would enjoy this tough but incredibly rewarding form of bike riding, please get in touch with us here and we will be happy to assist.
The club will host Round 6 of the NWCCA League at Blakemere Village on 21 October 2018. Racing at the “Cudd Cross” event begins at 10.30am with the final race of the day starting at 2.30pm. For full details please click here.
