NWCCA Cyclo-Cross League Event at Bebington Oval
On Sunday 22 October, local cycling club, Port Sunlight Wheelers, will once again be hosting a round of the regional North West Cyclo-Cross League at The Oval Leisure Centre in Bebington, which will attract over 400 racers from across the North West and further afield.
Port Sunlight Club captain, Craig Tabiner, says “We are very pleased, as a Club, to be hosting a round of the North West Cyclo-Cross league as it’s good to be able to put something back into the sport. The Club has some great Cyclo-Cross racers competing in the league so it will be nice to be able to support them on their home course which is being held at a great venue. For those not intending to take part, come along & watch the action as Cyclo-cross racing is held within a small area so you can watch the race from various vantage points without having to stray too far from the coffee van”
Port Sunlight Wheelers, a local club which has seen a membership boom in recent years due to the popularity of cycling, has worked closely with Wirral Council to make this event happen.
Cyclo-Cross is a fantastic way to get into competitive cycling as it’s so accessible, whilst still posing obvious challenges: testing competitors’ bike handling skills and fitness. Anyone can take part on the day providing you have a suitable bike. British Cycling say:
“British Cycling’s fastest growing competitive discipline, Cyclo-Cross has become a national institution when it comes to winter competition, with participation numbers nearly doubling since the sport came under British Cycling’s umbrella in 2000”
Why not get involved and come along to The Oval to spectate, cheer on the competitors, or even compete yourself. There is a whole host of races to represent everyone’s ability: with separate races for Under 8s, 10s, 12s, 16s, juniors, seniors, veterans, women & novices. Racing starts at 10.30am, with the final race of the day, the senior’s race, starting at 2.15pm.
Current North West Cyclo-Cross champion, Giles Drake, lives on the Wirral and will be hoping repeat his victory at this event in 2015
The event has been kindly sponsored by local businesses: Wirral Metals, Ominpex-Boiracer and K-Cycles.
